How to collect a complicated but valuable form of waste."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today we&#8217;ll discuss another kind of waste. <strong>Glass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3059 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Vetro-Anime-168x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" \/>It&#8217;s the easiest kind of waste to be <strong>recycled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is why Italy is in second place amongst the biggest recycling countries in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>With our 1,800,000 tons of glass recycled per year, only Germany is ahead of us, and we&#8217;re setting a notable example for countries like France and England.<\/p>\n<p>Glass recycling is a <strong>truly ecological process<\/strong>. It may have the most advantageous of all materials to reuse.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Lower Costs<\/li>\n<li>Low Environmental Impact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>lower costs<\/strong> come from the lower use of energy in the production of glass from recycled instead of <u>new<\/u> material.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the melting point is lowered, <strong>saving<\/strong> up to <strong>100kg of fuel for every ton of recycled material<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Without counting the <strong>reduced use of environmental resources<\/strong> caused by the mining of silica sand and Calcium Carbonate (1,2 tons less of primary materials). Lower transport and waste management costs.<\/p>\n<p>Collected glass is taken to appropriate, specialised centres, where the following steps are taken:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: upper-roman;\">\n<li>Manual selection of large foreign objects<\/li>\n<li>Dividing the material into different groups<\/li>\n<li>Manual removal of fragments of ceramic, porcelain, stone, metallic objects, plastic, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Crushing of the biggest pieces, using machines that don&#8217;t produce excessive quantities of glass dust<\/li>\n<li>Removal of metallic objects with magnets of electromagnets<\/li>\n<li>Removal of light objects such as paper, aluminium, and wood with extractor fans.<\/li>\n<li>Further automatic sorting of non-ferrous metallic objects such as aluminium, lead, copper, and opaque materials (pottery, porcellain, stones, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Final, manual sorting to remove the small bits of pottery, stones, and metal that are still left over after the previous steps<\/li>\n<li>Cleaning and milling<\/li>\n<li>Transformation into a primary material to be melted again (scrap).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>That&#8217;s all good, but how is it collected?<\/h2>\n<p>Sorry, I got carried away. I know you&#8217;ll already know a lot of this, and I don&#8217;t want to bore you further.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at what&#8217;s really important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is glass collected?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;With a truck&#8221;,<\/em> you&#8217;ll say. Sure, but you can&#8217;t just use any vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3061 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/vetro1-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/vetro1-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/vetro1.jpg 312w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/>Until not long ago, glass was only collected using bins on the street (like the one on the left). So trucks were needed with a crane that could pick up the bins.<\/p>\n<p>With the arrival of sorting in recycling, the bins changed, and so did the way they were collected.<\/p>\n<p>Now 120 litre bins (the ones with a hole on the top) are used a lot more, or bins for door-to-door collecting.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Contenitore-porta-a-porta-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Contenitore-porta-a-porta-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Contenitore-porta-a-porta.jpg 363w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3065\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bidone_vetro-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bidone_vetro-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Bidone_vetro.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, a vehicle with a bin lifting device is used.<\/p>\n<p>If there isn&#8217;t much material, we can use a dump truck, but in the long run some compaction can be useful.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, to better remove and spread out the contents on the back of the truck.<\/p>\n<p>However, glass has a terrible defect. It breaks into tiny pieces and gets into the equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Over time these pieces literally eat away at the equipment.<\/p>\n<p>For this exact reason, a compactor with an ejection plate, which are containers that have a plate which pushes the waste to the back, squashing it, isn&#8217;t the best solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It ISN&#8217;T SUITABLE for glass collection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The plate is actually fitted inside the container with a seal around it, which is literally destroyed by the glass as it goes past.<\/p>\n<p>It also crushes things extremely well, which isn&#8217;t useful for glass.<\/p>\n<h2>So then what should the right vehicle be like?<\/h2>\n<p>It should have <strong>three essential requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> A watertight body <\/strong>so that not even the smallest pieces, or liquids inside them, can escape<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower compacting power<\/strong> so the refuse isn&#8217;t broken too much<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slide rails<\/strong> for the equipment that are <strong>far away from the<\/strong> <strong>materials<\/strong> so that they can&#8217;t get inside and ruin it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A <strong>minicompactors<\/strong>, just like the one we thought of in 1980, is the ideal solution.<\/p>\n<p>A watertight container, a scoop to remove the refuse, but without the power of large crushers that would only break the glass. Then there are the blade <strong>slides that run along the outside of the body<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3068 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rossioleodinamica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Guide-esterne-300x180.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is VITAL to make sure the equipment lasts and doesn&#8217;t get literally eaten by the tiny pieces of glass that can get inside the slides.<\/p>\n<p>Because they&#8217;re on the outside, this isn&#8217;t a risk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>So we have a DEFINITIVE SOLUTION?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Infact, a current problem with this kind of equipment is the payload.<\/p>\n<p>Like I already told you in other articles <em>(and if it&#8217;s the first time you&#8217;re reading from me I suggest you go and read ALL the old articles!!)<\/em>, with the coming of the EURO 6 we&#8217;ve helped to drastically reduce the capacity of trucks.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-particle filter, urine tanks; we&#8217;ve lost so much.<\/p>\n<p>On large trucks (above 3,500kg) this problem hasn&#8217;t had too many consequences, but on small trucks (below 3,500kg), there&#8217;s little to no extra room.<\/p>\n<p>Once the steel equipment is on board, you can&#8217;t put on much else.<\/p>\n<p>This has <strong>excluded<\/strong> this kind of truck from heavy refuse collection like <strong>food waste<\/strong>, but it is still useful for refuse like plastic and unsorted waste.<\/p>\n<p><strong> And glass?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, glass is a heavy material. Shattered. When it&#8217;s intact, it has a much greater volume and its <strong>weight is relatively low<\/strong>. This means that a minicompactor on a 3,500 litre truck can be a solution when <strong>agile trucks<\/strong> are needed, and drivers <strong>with a special license aren&#8217;t<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>CONCLUSIONS<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s recap the characteristics of a glass collection truck.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>A watertight body <\/strong>so that not even the smallest pieces, or liquids inside them, can escape<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower crushing force<\/strong> so the refuse isn&#8217;t broken too much<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slide rails<\/strong> for the equipment that are <strong>far away from the materials <\/strong>so that they can&#8217;t get inside and ruin it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So there you have the few things that you need to keep in mind when you buy a vehicle for this kind of refuse.<\/p>\n<p>However, I suggest you to always <strong>trust<\/strong> companies that work in the sector and can give you a <strong>long-term experience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t go only by price<\/strong>, there are too many <strong>companies that scam you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You must have the security of being helped to buy a product that meets YOUR demands. Not something that someone has left over in storage and wants to sell at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle made just for YOU!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re that kind of company.
